Heating at about 2000 °C using a furnace or arc melting unit. Another technique is the reduction of tantalum pentoxide with carbon at a temperature of 1500–1700 °C in a vacuum or hydrogen atmosphere. This method was used to obtain tantalum carbide in 1876, but it lacked control over the stoichiometry of the product. TaC has been reported to be produced directly from the element by self-propagating high temperature synthesis.
